History

Windsor-Stevens, Inc. acquired the historic mill property in June 1980, but it has a much longer history in Windsor, Conn. In 1997, the Windsor Town Council honored the mill as the oldest continuously operating business in Windsor. The facillity was originally built in 1832 as a cotton fabric mill and then converted to paper in the mid 1800’s. Several owners operated the mill until George Merwin acquired it in 1905. Merwin operated the mill until 1922 when Chester Stevens bought the property. He in turn sold to David Schoales in 1970.

The paper machine and stock preparation equipment were completely rebuilt and replaced in the years between 1954 to 2000, so that today, Windsor-Stevens has a well-equipped fiberboard machine. The mill is unique in that it is the only unit in the United States that manufactures specialty fiberboard using the multi wet ply-back principle. This method limits volume of production but results in an excellent high quality product. Individual lightweight highly hydrated layers of fiber are formed, pressed and repressed.
